While councils across the country are cutting back on subsidised bus services, tens of thousands of Tamworth residents will benefit from the new travel scheme from Conservative controlled Staffordshire County Council.

From April 1st there be 24/7 free travel for pensioners and disabled residents using a bus pass.  They will also have the right to free travel for a buddy if they need to be accompanied for health reasons.

The concession for pensioners and disabled residents replaces eight different schemes formerly operating in Staffordshire.

County Councillor Lee Bates said “This is good news for Tamworth.  We need to get more people traveling on the bus, helping cut congestion, encouraging more people to travel to the shops so good for business, and open up a wide range of social and leisure opportunities.   Other Councils are cutting bus services but Staffordshire Conservative County Council are not, cutting bus services may help balance the books but in the long term it will damage local economies.   Conservatives are taking a long term view that backing public transport benefits everyone.”

Older residents would be able to access their new enhanced passes via Tamworth Borough Council reception, their local libary, from www.staffordshire.gov.uk/passiton or by calling 0300 111 8000 passes will be available from 1st April 2011.
