The promise was made by Ian Parry, Staffordshire County Councils's Deputy Leader
and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.County Councillor Parry said: "We
are obviously disappointed, but not in the least bit surprised by Michael Gove's
announcement yesterday.
"The county council has put enormous effort into BSF and
spent around £4 million getting to this stage. But much of that effort and cost was
dictated by the ludicrous Government-imposed bureaucracy that enveloped every aspect
of the project. As an authority we have always said we could achieve the same results
as BSF at half the cost.
"My message to schools today is that despite this setback
we must continue to improve educational outcomes for young people and find another
way to tackle the issue of school buildings which are outdated."
Yesterday's announcement
stopped work on nine schools in Tamworth and Rugeley. The plan to transform Blake
Valley Technology College into an academy is on hold, while the Landau Forte Academy
and Sixth Form Centre goes ahead. County Councillor Parry said: "There are some very
disappointed teachers, parents and young people today, but they must continue to
focus on educational results. "We have an unfinished project in Tamworth and we will
work with all the schools affected to find the best way ahead. We will be meeting
with all of the affected schools today.
"In the meantime we will lobby Government
ahead of the autumn Spending Review to give us the go-ahead to work with schools
to improve our building stock. Our Leader Philip Atkins and Chief Executive Nick
Bell are in Westminster today talking to our Staffordshire MPs. This will be high
on the agenda."
