Over twenty volunteers were officially recognised on Saturday for their outstanding contribution to their community. Members of the Wilnecote and Hockley Action Group (WHAG) each received a Volunteer Staffordshire lapel badge at the annual Senior Citizen’s Christmas Luncheon, which they organised for over 100 local senior citizens.

The badges were presented by local county councillor and Mayor of Tamworth, Lee Bates.

“It’s hard to describe the difference that this group had made to the communities of Wilnecote and Hockley,” said Lee.  “By leading the local Partner and Community Together meetings, they work alongside partner agencies such as the county and borough councils and the police to solve local issues and promote community spirit.  This means doing anything from litter picking to helping to tackle anti-social behaviour, and of course organising events that bring the community together, such as today’s luncheon.

I’m delighted that I’ve been able to recognise their contribution in a small way with the presentation of these badges, and by funding today’s luncheon from my allocation of the county council’s Staffordshire Local Community Fund.”

The volunteer group has been so successful that eleven other Partner and Communities Together meetings have now been set up across Tamworth to tackle the local issues that matter to local people.

The Chairman of the Wilnecote and Hockley Action Group, Graham Holt, said:

“It’s come as a great surprise to us to receive a Volunteer Staffordshire badge; it’s an honour.

Although we don’t volunteer for praise, it’s great to be recognised for what we do for the community.  This really shows what can be achieved when people take just a little time to put something back.

Saturday’s luncheon for example, was a real thank you to our senior citizen’s who play such a part in our local communities, as well as an opportunity for them to renew old acquaintances.

We know that the Action group will go from strength to strength, and we hope that people will consider coming along to our monthly meetings to help us make our communities a better place for everyone.”

Tamworth county council and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Ben Adams, said:  “This is what the Volunteer Staffordshire campaign is all about – recognising and thanking those volunteers that often go unnoticed.

My thanks go to the Action Group who have made such a difference to Tamworth, and to Staffordshire.”
